Why didn’t I

Why didn’t I watch closer

when you weaved us rugs

of Lauhala, Lauahala everyday

and WHY didn’t I try

a little harder to crochet

all the beautiful doilies so hard to find now

the way you used to make things

Everything you made

Why didn’t I settle down from playing

to watch the prints you made

on the Tapa that are now

between the mattress of my married cousins

Why didn’t I realize

How far away the temporal being would be

Once you joined the rest of our mothers and fathers.

I miss everything I should have done better

but useless to do them without you

But I will still

Do my best to DO

and not just try
